The Department of Electrical Engineering has significantly grown from its inception. With the advent of growth in industrial
Electronics, industrial communication, energy sources and their utilization. The department has developed an important Place in the National Capital Region of Delhi. The Department has annual intake of 113 and 75 students in B.Tech Electrical Engineering and Electrical and Electronics Engineering, respectively. The Department is also offering B.Tech (Evening)with annual intake of 36 students. At the post graduate level M.Tech program in Control and Instrumentation and Power System with annual intake of 21 students in each specialization. In addition to the above significant numbers of research scholars have been admitted for Phd program. The department is introducing part time (evening) PG program in Power Electronics and Drives and Electrical Energy Systems from 2012?13.
The Department offers diverse area of research including Intelligent Control, Optimization, Power Quality, Renewable Energy Sources, Smart Grids, Power System Operation and Control, Power System Dynamics and Stability, Flexible A. C. Transmission Systems (FACTS)E , electrical Drives and Hybrid Electric Vehicles. To cater the needs of experimentation and R&D; activities, the department hastens well-equipped laboratories in the area of Electrical Machines, Power Systems, Power Electronics, Control Systems, Process Control, Microprocessors and Instrumentation & Measurements. The laboratories are equipped with sophisticated equipment, tests setups, FPGA based data acquisition system, embedded controllers, Digital Signal Processors, Medium power inverters-converters, various Electrical Drives , PLC s ,Power analyzers, spectrum analyzers, etc. To name a few. Some sponsored projects have been carried out/being carried out in the area of FACTS Induction Generators and Electric Drives with grant from AICTE and a project on Broadband on Power lines executed in collaboration with NDPL ,sponsored by Department of Information Technology, Ministry of Communication and Information Technology. The Department is also engaged in consultancy in various field of Electrical Engineering.
Faculty members of the department have published more than 210 papers in International and National Journals of repute and Proceedings of National and International Conferences in last five years. The department regularly contributes research papers in IEEE Transactions and IEEE Proceedings, Journals in Electrical Engineering from Elsevier Science, etc. Each year many research papers are presented in various international and national conferences. The department also generously contributes in professional activities undertaken By IEEE and lET Delhi chapter. Several popular technical books have been Authored by the faculty members of the department. Some faculty members have received awards of merit in research and development and some have acquired patent for their research. The department plans to have new laboratories for Testing, Calibration & Standardization, Photovoltaic and Energy Storage, Power Quality & Energy Conservation, Electric Drives, Industrial Automation, Bio-Instrumentation, Distribution and Automation Centre and SCADA systems.
The Department has conducted two weeks AICTE sponsored staff development programme on "Flexible A. C. Transmission Systems and Voltage Stability: Recent Advances" during July 11-22, 2011. A National Conference entitled "National Electrical Engineering Conference" on the theme Power & Energy Systems for Tomorrow was organized on 16-17th December 2011. IEEE India International Conference on Power Electronics (IICPE) is being organized on December 6-8, 2012. An International Electrical Engineering Conference (lEEC-2013)is proposed to be held in October 2013.
The Department is hosting international and national conference, workshop and invited lecture series every year. It is the agenda of the department to further augment the professional activities. The department also owes to take-up the challenges of providing efficient Electrical Systems and Energy Sources. The students are motivated for technical and creative activities besides classroom teaching andLaboratory exercises through technical fests like TROIKA organized under IEEE student's chapter. They are also encouraged to participate in various group learning and discussion activities in addition to presentation of seminar and term paper presentations on individual basis. Emphasis is laid on computer based assignments through modeling and simulation of various Electrical Systems in well-equipped laboratories. In past, several students of the department undertook Industrial training at International Organizations, and many others have presented their technical papers at various contests abroad, and have brought laurels to the department.
By December,2011, total numbers of jobs offered to undergraduate students of Electrical Engineering were 61, out of which 46 were of core, 11 of consultancy, and 3 of KPO and I of trading profile. Amongst these 61 offers, 59 were campus placements while 2 PPOs were given by Tata Steel. Reliance Industries recruited maximum number of students so far (eight), closely followed by Tata Motors (seven)and L& T (six) in the core sector. Maximum number of offers in the consultancy sector was extended by Deloitte (six). GAIL emerged as the highest paying company, with a package of 12 LPA while recruiting two students. It is expected that all the students of B.Tech. Electrical Engineering would be placed by the end of the session.
