Department of Civil Engineering
Traditionally Civil Engineering has played an important role in improving the civic life of society by harmonizing the natural resources available on earth. Some of the major areas in the field of Civil Engineering are planning, research, design and construction of various structures like (green) buildings, roads, traffic and transportation, ports and harbours, airways and navigation, irrigation and power, dam and reservoirs, bridges, tunnels, Foundation systems, and Hydraulics and Water Resources Engineering. Broadly a civil Engineer is also expected to involve with Municipal and Sanitary services, design and construction of waste containment systems, disposal of high level nuclear wastes, and protection of Ground water resources, surveying, GIS and remote sensing, and disaster mitigation.

The department offers B.Tech programme in Civil Engineering at undergraduate level and offers M. Tech. degree programmes at post graduate level in Hydraulics and Flood Control, Structural Engineering, and Geotechnical Engineering. The M. Tech. Programmes (erstwhile M. E. programmes) for about last 40 years, have contributed significantly to the manpower development in highly relevant areas of national importance. The department also provides opportunity to working engineers for upgrading their qualification under Continuing Education Programme.
The UG curriculum is broad-based and designed to introduce the students with a wide range of problems encountered by civil engineers. System of Choice based Electives, self-study and MOOC courses, and independently conducted projects are offered to enable the students to develop additional depth in the areas of special interest to them. The practical training, which is part of the curriculum, aims to expose the students to understand and learn how to deal with actual field problems. Laboratory experiments, computer aided analysis and simulations, use of design and drawing software, and regular tutorial classes are held to build confidence in the students. The Department is well equipped with laboratories related to Structure, Concrete testing, Soil Mechanics, Highway Engineering, Experimental Stress Analysis, Computational Mechanics, Photogrammetric and GIS facilities, Environmental Engineering and Hydraulics laboratories.
The department undertakes to organize special lectures and discussion by eminent persons from the field and industry. The department has established a student chapter namely "SEM DEC Student Chapter" with the society for Experimental Mechanics, USA. The interested students are encouraged to become member of SEM DEC Students Chapter. Keeping in View the requirements of personality Development of the students, the Department has started in 2009, the Society of Civil & Environmental Engineers (SCEE). There are a few more societies in the department to cater various other professional interests. The department of Civil Engineering lay greater emphasis on quality research and development.
Excellent facilities are available to conduct research for the award of Ph.D. degree in the disciplines of Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Structural Dynamics, Earthquake Engineering, Traffic planning, Stochastic modelling and applications of Artificial Intelligence in Civil Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, River Water Quality Modelling, Environmental Engineering, Experimental Mechanics, Geotechnical Engineering and other interdisciplinary areas.
