Prof. Om Prakash Verma, popularly known as Prof. O. P. Verma, is a distinguished senior academician currently serving as a Professor at Delhi Technological University (DTU), New Delhi. He has had an illustrious career spanning decades across teaching, research, and academic leadership, making him one of the most versatile and impactful figures in Indian technical education. His journey is characterized by a rare combination of depth in scholarly research and breadth in administrative service, having had the honour of heading three separate academic departments at DTU -Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE), Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), and Information Technology (IT). He has served as Chairman BoS, and Chairman Department Research Committee of Department of CSE, EC, and IT at DTU. He was also entrusted with central university responsibilities as Head of the Computer Centre and Dean of Continuing Education. He also served as Principal of G. B. Pant Engineering College, New Delhi. His educational foundation was laid at Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT), Jaipur, where he earned his B.E. in Electronics and Communication Engineering, followed by advanced degrees including a Master’s from IIT Delhi and a Ph.D. from the University of Delhi, credentials that equipped him to move fluidly across the intersecting domains of electronics, computing, and information systems, a versatility that would later define his leadership at DTU. As a Head of the ECE department, he championed modernization of the curriculum, fostered industry collaborations, and mentored faculty and students. As a Head of CSE department, he guided the department during a time of exponential growth in computing disciplines, strengthening its emphasis on artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science, aligning academic programs with emerging global trends, and ensuring that students had exposure to both theoretical foundations and practical applications, thereby consolidating DTU’s reputation as a leader in computing education. His tenure as Head of the IT department was equally significant, reflecting his ability to adapt leadership skills to emerging areas, where he prioritized curriculum alignment with industry needs in cybersecurity, information systems, and enterprise software. As a Head of the Computer Centre, Prof. Verma oversaw the establishment and enhancement of DTU’s ICT infrastructure. As a Dean of Continuing Education, he spearheaded programs for professional development and part-time technical education, extending DTU’s reach to working professionals and reinforcing the university’s relevance in the era of lifelong learning and rapid technological evolution. On deputation, his leadership extended to serving as Principal of G. B. Pant Engineering College (now G. B. Pant DSEU Okhla-I Campus), where he oversaw governance reforms, curriculum strengthening, faculty development initiatives, and infrastructure improvement, all of which contributed to enhancing the institution’s academic quality and standing in Delhi’s higher education landscape. He was the Chief Investigator of ISEA Project Phase-I and Phase-II, sponsored by the Department of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India at DTU. Professor Verma has contributed academically to several academic and professional bodies. He is/was a member of BoG/Senate of different academic institutions across the country. He is/was an expert member in peer team visits of NAAC, NBA accreditations, and UGC expert teams for universities and colleges. His research contributions are equally significant. He was listed in the top 2% of Scientists in the world in the study performed by Stanford University USA for the years 2020 and 2021. He is the recipient of the Premier Research Award for Excellence in Research awarded by DTU. He has authored numerous publications in leading journals and conferences, over 3,300+ citations on Google Scholar, with an h-index of 29 and an i10-index of 66. He has received 5 patents. As a mentor, Prof. Verma has supervised 13 Ph.D. scholars. His professional engagements include serving as a conference General Chair of the IEEE-sponsored India International Conference on Information Processing and 4th International Conference on Computers and Management. He has been Chief Patron/Coordinator in organizing several faculty development programs/seminars/workshops and contributed as a resource person by delivering expert talks in workshops, and national & international conferences. He is an editor of books and author of book chapters.
Prof. O. P. Verma stands as a pillar in India’s technical education ecosystem. His legacy lies in the multiple dimensions of his career. His administrative leadership, which has strengthened DTU across three departments, and his institution-building efforts, which include his tenure as Principal of G. B. Pant Engineering College—all of which together mark him as a rare figure who embodies the true spirit of an academic leader, administrator, and mentor in India’s higher education landscape.
